About Us….
We are a group that represents residents living beside Randalstown/Simonstown Tailings Dam. SENT aims to raise awareness about the ever-present dangers for communities and the environment and we oppose the further expansion of the mine Tara Deep along with the proposed second Tailings Dam at Sillogue/Simonstown Our overall aim is to work for the protection of our environment especially with concerns for the children of future generations.

Tailings – What are they?
Tailings consist of waste material that remains after the extraction of ore in mining. This waste is mixed with water to make slurry or sludge which is easier to transport. The sludge, including chemicals such as cadmium, mercury and arsenic is then stored in the tailings pond or dam.
Randalstown tailings facility stores the tailings produced by Boliden/Tara Mines and is located in the heart of Navans townlands. Since the closure of Boliden/Tara Mines in July 2023, the facilty has been Maintained. If and when Boliden re-open the minein the 2nd quater of 2024, operations will resume.
Our Concerns
Despite promises of no further development of tailings in this area, Boliden have purchased land in the townland of Sillogue and their staff have indicated that this is for the purpose of constructing a 2nd tailings facility.
Over the last 40 years, valid fears and concerns have never been addressed by the mining companies (including Boliden) to the satisfaction of the local community. Boliden repeatedly claim to engage with all stakeholders, but these engagements lack transparancy and have resulted in increaseing levels of distrust due to misinformation and broken promises.
