Ireland’s Largest Waste Storage Facility

Aug 30, 2026 | Uncategorized

From our research, this is a list of the largest current and historic waste storage facilities in the country. It is highly dominated by mine waste storage facilities.

On top of the list of the largest waste storage facilities in the Republic of Ireland lies Boliden Tara Mines Randalstown Tailings Storage Facility, the footprint of the storage facility cover a massive 255 Ha of some of the best land in the Boyne valley. It would occupy about one third the size of Dublin’s Phoenix park. We estimate that the wider TSF footprint covers over 60% of the townland of Randalstown and 20% of Simonstown townland. This was first constructed in the mid 1970’s with a subsequent extension in the mid 1980’s, raises in 1998, 2003 and 2009 and a further extension in 2019. Currently, Boliden Tara Mines have indicated that a further tailings pond will be required to accommodate the waste from the Tara Deep section of the mine, it is estimated that this would have an initial footprint of 60Ha, with further expansions expected to follow
